Distinct Motive Returns to Brooklyn [Interview]

Deep Dark & Dangerous heavy-hitter Distinct Motive makes his highly-anticipated return to Brooklyn this Saturday, November 4. Alongside the legendary J:Kenzo making the trip from the UK, New York-based heavy-hitters isded and SMACK NYC resident Roots, as well as NYC debutant Athena, Distinct Motive is set to headline a major night of bass music in the Big Apple. Ready to helm New York’s Intent Audio rig through the night, Distinct Motive is lauded as a fan favorite far and wide.

Before he hits the decks this Saturday, Distinct Motive took a few of our questions about his opinion of North American Soundsystem Culture, his breakthrough into the American bass scene, and much more. Grab your tickets for the Intent Audio Showcase Presented by Sermon Nation and SMACK NYC here.

SMACK: It's been a long time since you've played in New York; how excited are you to come back to play for the Brooklyn crowd?

Distinct Motive: Excited would be an understatement as it's been soo long! I cannot wait to flex the Intent Audio Soundsystem. Thanks for having me guys!

SMACK: You're well known for your sense of humor and for putting your personality into your music. How important has that been for you in your career and success?

Distinct Motive: Gotta stay true to myself. I'm just a big dork at the end of the day. I'm glad people vibe with that. Be yourself!

SMACK: Hailing from Toronto, you've always had a massive following in Canada, but you've also become a major name in the States. What was that journey like breaking into the American scene?

Distinct Motive: Breaking into the American scene has been a 10-year-long journey. I started playing shows back in 2012-2013 in places like Detroit and Buffalo. I will say I've seen many people come and go in that time period, from promoters to artists, and fans. The last 2 years have been a real breakthrough for me and I'm super thankful for all the opportunities and support that's come my way.

SMACK: You're a prolific producer with releases on some of the biggest labels in dubstep. How do you continue to push your sound and adapt while maintaining your signature style?

Distinct Motive: I wouldn't say I push my sound too much. I don't sit in the studio and go "ok it's time to push the boundaries of this style" I just make what I'm feeling and if people dig it great! My approach to making dubstep is keep it simple. I just picture myself in front of a system and think, will this make me dance?

SMACK: You recently played at the Submersion Festival in Pennsylvania alongside Khiva. What was that experience like and what's your opinion on festivals in the States?

Distinct Motive: I didn't play too many festivals this year as my visa wasn't renewed until Aug 2023. But being able to play places like Wakaan and Submersion was a real treat! Really good soundsystems, really good hospitality and really good people. It's all you need really. I hope to play more festivals next season. Already locked in a couple actually. More on that later. :)

SMACK: As a touring DJ, you have the opportunity to experience several cities and music communities throughout North America. What is your view on the current state of Soundsystem culture in Canada and the US?

Distinct Motive: I think it's the best it's ever been. So many soundsystems all across North America!

SMACK: Outside of music what are some of your major passions and hobbies that bring you inspiration?

Distinct Motive: Riding the bike, listening to music that isn't dubstep, and working on building Distinct Motive's future.

SMACK: What was your personal highlight of 2023 so far?

Distinct Motive: Infrasound Equinox - the most insane energy from the crowd. The crowd was so loud at points I couldn't hear the monitors. If you haven't gone, Go!
